Why investigate?
Companies developing lighter-than-air (LTA) technology for broader use cases have multiplied since 2007. About 20 ventures and programmes are now active worldwide, and newcomers like HyLight, founded in 2022, are still raising capital. India's private segment is newer but real: Kalam Labs (2021), Red Balloon Aerospace (2025) and aerostat maker GB Texcoat now operate alongside DRDO and Bharat Forge. Investment has grown from small grant-linked rounds to roughly $1 billion in disclosed private capital. It has also shifted from defence demonstrators and private patrons to strategic investors such as CMA CGM and SoftBank, and to sovereign programmes like India's ~₹15,000 crore AS-HAPS. Applications now span cargo, defence ISR, disaster communications, power-line and pipeline inspection and climate monitoring. These uses exploit the airship's high payload, endurance of days to months, and infrastructure-free operation compared with helicopters, aircraft and aerostats. But production costs near €500 million for a single programme, plus helium, hangarage and ground handling, make cost and scalability the key concerns.
