Hydrogen storage vs fuel-cell

Hydrogen looks irresistible when we compare energy per kilogram of fuel. On a small aircraft, however, the pressure vessel, valves, regulators, fuel-cell balance-of-plant and their packaging must fly too. I want to know where the complete installed system stops buying us useful flight time.

Why investigate?

A fuel cell does not carry hydrogen in isolation. The tank occupies fuselage volume, introduces structural interfaces and shifts the centre of gravity as fuel is consumed. For a compact surveillance platform, a nominally superior energy source could force a larger airframe or reduce payload. Understanding that crossover is more useful than quoting fuel specific energy alone. It might also reveal that there is no single crossover: winged cruisers and hovering aircraft have very different power demands.

What is already known?

The 2019 review repeatedly treats storage mass, tank volume and balance-of-plant as major limits on fuel-cell UAV endurance.

What remains unresolved?

Which combination of mission duration, average shaft power, payload and tank technology moves the decision from battery to fuel cell? Published demonstrators rarely have identical mass accounting. We also need to decide whether to count refuelling equipment, usable hydrogen, reserve power and degradation in the comparison.
